EDUCATIONAL GOALS
Integrate knowledge of present-time Nature by "hiking" in the past and interpreting the signals locked in rocks and products of ancient organisms (fossils). The student is virtually guided through geological sites and significant paleontological deposits in the world in order to gain a detailed understanding of some palaeoenvironments and of their ancient organisms. Criteria are provided for interpreting certain geological situations and associations of fossils as variously filtered and transformed witnesses of ancient natural systems.

- capace di ordinare cronologicamente alcuni fondamentali eventi che hanno interessato i sistemi naturali nel Fanerozoico;
- in grado di reperire la letteratura scientifica pertinente e di selezionare le informazioni affidabili su internet;
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
Interpreting the existing natural systems through a perspective of long-term environmental change.APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the teaching, students must demonstrate that they have acquired the ability to interpret existing natural systems through a perspective of long-term environmental change, both in relation to abiotic factors and in relation to the emergence of organisms with new characteristics due to evolutionary process.INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT
Students will also have acquired the ability to quickly find and evaluate information on the studies that document the Nature of the past.COMMUNICATION SKILLS
The student will know how to synthesize and communicate new information not presented as part of the course, which can contribute to the updating of one's perception of the transformation of Nature on Earth over time.LEARNING SKILLS
Acquisition of autonomous learning capacity and self-assessment of its
preparation, in order to undertake subsequent studies with a high degree of autonomy.- Oggetto:

ATTENTION - CHANGES IN EXAMINATION METHODS The restrictions imposed by the measures on the Coronavirus pandemic require the implementation of remote verification methods. Therefore, until further indications, the exams will be carried out alternatively in presence or through an oral interview via Webex. The interview will include some questions on the topics of the program. IMPORTANT: To access the exam, you must register for the exam using the University procedure by the deadline. Before the time set for the exam, all subscribers will receive, by email to their institutional email address, information for accessing a special meeting called on the Webex platform. Each meeting will remain open at least 3 hours, regardless of the number of members. Any problems (for example the need for specific times for the interview) must be communicated in time by email to the teacher. In case of inability to access the Webex platform, an alternative method will be agreed via email, within 3 hours from the beginning of the exam session.METHOD OF VERIFICATION OF LEARNING
The exam consists of an oral test evaluated with an overall mark, up to 30 scores on 30. The oral test consists in 3 questions aimed at verifying the student's understanding of the main elements highlighted when "hiking" in the Nature of the past during lectures. The student may also require, at the start of the test, to replace a question with the evaluation of a research study, conducted on relevant topics and presented in a brief printed report.
