Obiettivi formativi

Provide knowledge on the structure and function of the brain through a comparative approach in the context of Vertebrates to understand the neural bases animal behaviours. This educational objective is fully relevant to that of the master course, which aims to train graduates with specific skills in basic and applied ethological research, that is, in the study of animal behavior which, represents the phenotypic manifestation of the organization and function of the nervous system. 1 CFU will be devoted to the preparation and exhibition of topics studied by the students with the aim of promoting a critical approach to the reading of scientific articles about the subject and the  working group.

VISITING PROFESSOR 12 ORE. ATTIVITA' PROPOSTA: The development and function of GnRH neurons: a common neural circuit in vertebrates controlling reproduction

- History of Comparative Neurobiology (objectives, approaches and methods).

- Overview of the organization of the nervous system in metazoans.

- Ontogeny, phylogeny and adaptation of the CNS of vertebrates (origin, homologous structures and adaptive changes).

- Evolutionary changes in the size and structural organization of the brain.

- Theories on the evolution of the brain (the evolution of the neocortex in mammals).

- The structural plasticity of the central nervous system (types of plasticity, the concept of critical period). The role of the external environment in the modulation of plasticity (the effects of enrichment and deprivation on olfactory system and hippocampus, the maternal separation as a model od social deprivation. Adult Neurogenesis in evolutionary perspective.

VISITING PROFESSOR 12 HOURS. PROPOSED ACTIVITY: The development and function of GnRH neurons: a common neural circuit in vertebrates controlling reproduction

Learning objective
The objective of this module is to teach and train master's students in the field of comparative neurobiology through direct and active interaction with an internationally recognised expert in the field. Through analysis of the most recent literature and active discussion, students will develop critical thinking and knowledge of the cellular/molecular/environmental mechanisms underlying the development, function and dysfunction of the vertebrate nervous system. Students will learn from an experienced researcher how to approach problems and formulate research questions. They will also acquire an in-depth knowledge of innovative, state-of-the-art approaches and technologies that can be applied to the study of neural system development.

THIS ACTIVITY WILL BE ASSESSED (UP TO 2 POINTS) AS PART OF THE FINAL VOTE
